News from LAX

Full-body scanners to be installed at all LAX terminals

Rapiscan's Secure 1000 scanners, known as "backscatter machines," bounce low-level X-rays off airline passengers to peek underneath clothes as a secondary security screening measure.

The machines produce intimate images that obscure the faces of passengers, but natural curves and crevices are clear enough to detect hidden weapons or explosives. The graphic portraits are viewed by security screeners in a remote, enclosed area away from the passengers.

The revealing images are immediately deleted after each viewing and cannot be saved, transmitted or printed, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

Despite privacy and health concerns raised over the last several years, Rapiscan company executives insist the backscatter machines are safe. (Marroquin)

LABTA July Meeting and 40th Anniversary Celebration

The July 14th meeting was a great success at the elegant Palomar Hotel with speaker Thomas Roth of CMI Green Community Marketing. Our management company, EMA, made every effort to contact as many of our past LABTA presidents as possible to join us for the LABTA's 40th anniversary. In all, nine of the past presidents were in attendance.

If you missed the meeting, click on the link for Shutterfly to view photos from the meeting; in addition, Thomas Roth delivered a wonderful presentation on Green Travel. Thanks to your Director of Programs and Venues, Usha Jumani for booking a relevant and timely speaker for our group.

If you would like to participate in a Green Travel Survey, Mr. Thomas Roth has made one available that will remain active until August 31, 2010

 NBTAPAC Logo

What is NBTAPAC?

NBTAPAC is NBTA's political action committee. It enables NBTA's advocacy team to raise money to support political candidates for federal office who know and understand - and support - the issues of business travelers.

Whether or not you are politically "active", there is no better way to support the candidates and the issues that impact your company's travel needs. Your contribution, combined with the donations from your NBTA colleagues from across the U.S., will help ensure that NBTA has the power to back those members of Congress who show leadership and commitment to the business travel community's issues. So let your voice be heard!

A big Thank You goes out to your Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Kjarsten Philipsen, for organizing yet another successful event to benefit the people who visit Southern California beaches.

Whether you live here or just visiting, a clean beach is a nice beach and we all want to relax on a nice beach.

Kjarsten will be asking for volunteers to help out at the next event, the LAFoodbank in October. Clear some time on your calendar and let Kjarsten know you would like to help out.

Thank you to all the volunteers who came to the beach on July 17th to help.

In the beginning of 1934 - Nelly Diener became the first flight attendant of Europe, attained a world-famous status - but she lost her life after just 79 flights in a crash near Wurmlingen, Germany, on July 27, 1934. The cause of the crash was material fatigue. (Wikipedia)

There is a web page with photos of the evolution of Swissair flight attendant uniforms that is worth a look: Swissair Uniforms
