Los Angeles business travelers urge air safety upgrades

(LOS ANGELES - September 20, 2010) - The Los Angeles Business Travel Association today urged Congress to support President Obama's call for funding a satellite-based air traffic control system and airport runway improvements.

The Obama Administration is proposing a "robust investment" in the development of FAA's NextGen ATC system, which Congress has not yet determined how to fund.  The President also proposed to rehabilitate or reconstruct 150 miles of runways at U.S. Airports.

"A more accurate satellite-based ATC system will increase the margin safety for air travelers, reduce flight delays, increase fuel efficiency for airlines - all of which are a direct benefit to business travelers," said Frank Dolce, Director of Legislative Affairs.

Dolce said federal funding for runways can benefit Los Angeles travelers by hastening safety improvements to the north airfield at LAX.  Specifically, separating the runways on the north side will permit construction of a center taxiway - something the FAA has urged for more than decade.  A similar project on the south airfield significantly reduced runway incursions, Dolce noted.

 U. S. Court Of Appeals Decision Allows Enforcement Of Non-Solicitation Of Funds Policy At Los Angeles International Airport
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa and airport officials are pleased with a mandate issued by the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals lifting a preliminary injunction, imposed in 1997, that allows Los Angeles Airport Police to begin enforcement of a Los Angeles City ordinance prohibiting solicitation and immediate receipt of funds in the terminals, parking areas, and adjacent sidewalks at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

"This is a huge step forward in ensuring the comfort and safety of the traveling public at LAX," said Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey. "From now on, the traveling public will not have to worry about solicitors asking for money."

    Trans World Airlines (TWA)

TWA's fortunes began to dim in the 1980s in the wake of deregulation of the commercial aviation industry. TWA's management even briefly considered selling to the infamous Frank Lorenzo, the man at the helm of Continental Airlines who had gained a reputation for his hardheaded financial dealings. In the end, in September 1985, TWA accepted a bid from another corporate raider, Carl Icahn, who bought up most of the TWA stock. The following year, the new TWA acquired Ozark Airlines (Siddiqi)
